On Thursday night, Saint Mary’s easily defeated New Mexico 72-58 behind 25 points from Aidan Mahaney, giving the Gaels their second straight victory to begin the season.

Aidan Mahaney Scores 25 Points: Mahaney made 8 of 12 field goals, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and was unstoppable the entire evening. In addition, he contributed five assists, seven rebounds, and was a key player in Saint Mary’s outstanding second-half performance.

In the second half, the Gaels led by as many as 19 points, and they kept New Mexico scoreless for more than seven minutes. Saint Mary’s also caused 19 turnovers and outrebounded New Mexico 38–24.

One of the numerous reasons Saint Mary’s was able to win so handily was Mahaney’s performance. Mitchell Saxen (11 points), Logan Johnson (12 points), and Harry Wessels (10 rebounds) all had strong performances for the Gaels.

Outstanding defence play by Saint Mary’s allowed New Mexico to shoot only 39% from the field and 28% from 3-point range. Additionally, the Lobos were only allowed to attempt 11 free throws.

The next game for Saint Mary’s is against Cal Poly on Saturday. The next game for New Mexico is against UTEP on Saturday.

This year’s Saint Mary’s squad appears to be quite talented. They are playing with a great deal of confidence and depth as well as experience. This season, they’ll be a formidable opponent in the WCC.
