A piece of the asteroid Bennu will be sent back to Earth by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission on September 24, 2023. This is the first attempt by the United States to take a sample from an asteroid and bring it back to Earth.
OSIRIS-REx: A New Era of Asteroid Exploration Begins

They sent OSIRIS-REx into space in 2016 and it got to Bennu in 2018. The spaceship studied Bennu for two years while it went around it. The mission was able to take a sample of Bennu’s surface in October 2020.

OSIRIS REx New Era of Asteroid Exploration Begins: Spacecraft OSIRIS-REx is getting closer to Earth right now. The spaceship will let go of the sample capsule on September 24. It will then fall to Earth through a parachute and drop in the Utah desert.

It will be studied by scientists all over the world to find out more about how the solar system came to be and if there is life in other planets. Since Bennu is a very old asteroid, the samples it gives us are very important. Asteroids that are very old are thought to have kept a lot of the stuff that was in the early solar system.

OSIRIS REx New Era of Asteroid Exploration Begins: A lot of things make scientists excited to study the OSIRIS-REx materials. One important reason is to find out more about how Bennu is put together. The fact that there are organic chemicals on Bennu is very interesting to scientists. An asteroid called Bennu may have had something to do with the start of life on Earth because it contains organic chemicals, which are the building blocks of life.

OSIRIS REx New Era of Asteroid Exploration Begins: Scientists are also excited to look at the OSIRIS-REx samples because they will help them learn more about Bennu’s past. They think that Bennu might have been made up of pieces of a bigger asteroid that broke apart a very long time ago. Scientists want to learn more about how asteroids form and change over time by looking at the OSIRIS-REx samples.

The OSIRIS-REx sample coming back to Earth is a big step forward in space research. Since the Apollo trips to the Moon, this is the first time that something from another world has been brought back to Earth. Scientists will learn a lot of new things about asteroids and the early solar system from the OSIRIS-REx samples.

Reasons why studying the OSIRIS-REx sample might be helpful:

Find out more about what rocks are made of and whether they could support life.

  • Understanding how rocks form and change over time
  • Looking into what space radiation does to asteroids
  • Coming up with new ways to mine rocks

Making plans for future trips to asteroids

It is amazing what the OSIRIS-REx project has done, and it will be interesting to see what scientists learn from the Bennu samples. The mission shows how creative people can be and how much we want to learn about the world.
